Profile

Mark Renken is the Director of Health Care Advisory Services at Brown Smith Wallace. Mark has more than 35 years of health care industry experience as an employee, owner and advisor. During his career, he’s focused on working with physicians and physician practices from both the hospital and free-standing governance perspective.

Throughout his career Mark has helped physicians and acute care providers with assorted services, including:

  • Practice management, including startup services
  • Value-based payment systems
  • Recruitment and retention strategies and implementation
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Practice acquisitions and integration
  • Managed care contracting and negotiations
  • Revenue optimization, including direct billing services
  • Credentialing services
  • Compensation design and implementation

Mark previously served as the Regional Executive Director/Chief Administrative Officer for the SSM – St. Louis Physicians’ Organization, a multi-specialty group practice with more than 350 providers. In this role, he successfully:

  • Led the growth of the medical group to more than 30 locations with a total of over 1,400 employees
  • Negotiated and approved all employment contracts and compensation plan designs, ensuring consistency between departments and legal compliance
  • Participated in all managed care, gain-share, and risk contract negotiations and led the development of internal systems to manage these agreements
  • Created a physician governance structure to ensure physician leadership was appropriately represented
  • Achieved satisfaction scores in the top 10 percent performance category according to annual Press-Ganey surveys

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Westminster College. Mark is the Board Treasurer for Volunteers in Medicine in St. Charles, MO, and is a member and past president of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) of Missouri.
