Brown Smith Wallace has assembled the most experienced retail industry team in the St. Louis region with national and international experience. The firm’s retail team is led by Marty Doerr, who has national experience on both sides of the desk as VP- and SVP-Taxes at The May Department Stores Company for 16 years and as national partner in charge of retail tax at a major international accounting firm.

Marty and his team have both sides of the desk experience at major retailers and at international accounting firms. For instance, Rob Haggerty, another partner on the retail team, was Director of Taxes for the Sonic retail chain. Overall, the Brown Smith Wallace retail team has extensive experience in federal, international and state and local tax planning and compliance; business property taxes; financial reporting; accounting methods; franchise accounting and taxes; cost segregation studies; credits and incentives; outsourced accounting; and IRS audits, including interaction, appeals and negotiations.

In addition, our team has provided retailers with captive formation consulting, construction audits, cybersecuritydata analysis, fraud prevention and detection, independent insurance consulting, internal audit process improvement,  and unclaimed property consulting.

Our team has also provided outsourced tax consulting for major retailers, such as Lord and Taylor, and has extensive experience in working with private equity owned retailers. The Brown Smith Wallace team also has significant turnaround and transaction advisory experience with retail chains.
