In 1972, Jeffrey Smith and Harvey Wallace founded the accounting firm that would become what Brown Smith Wallace is today, a top-100 CPA and business advisory firm. Since then, we have grown to over 300 professionals located in three offices in the St. Louis metro area serving clients throughout the world. Over the decades, we have reached and celebrated many milestones:
- 1975: David Brown joins as a member and the firm name evolves from Smith and Wallace to Brown, Smith, Wallace & Company
- 1983: The firm makes its first expansion in Clayton, Missouri.
- 1993: Brown Smith Wallace merges with User Group, Inc., to form affiliate company, BSW Consulting, Inc.
- 1994: The firm formalizes a business casual dress code policy.
- 1995: 50 employees are on staff, and the firm relocates to Creve Coeur, Missouri.
- 1997: Brown Smith Wallace celebrates silver anniversary with $5 million in revenue.
- 1998: Small Business Services and Benefit Plans Plus become firm affiliates.
- 2001: Employee number reaches 100.
- 2002: Firm merges with St. Charles firm Megargel Willbrand & Co. to establish St. Charles, Missouri, presence.
- 2004: Firm revenue hits $10 million.
- 2007: Firm revenue reaches $20 million.
- 2008: Brown Smith Wallace is named one of the “Best Accounting Firms to Work For” in the inaugural survey by Accounting Today.
- 2009: Harvey Wallace is elected managing member.
- 2010: Firm receives Torch Award from the Better Business Bureau of St. Louis for our high level of service and integrity. Brown Smith Wallace also opens an Illinois office.
- 2012: Employee number reaches 200. The firm is recognized as a Top Workplace by the Louis Post-Dispatch.
- 2013: Brown Smith Wallace is the only accounting firm in St. Louis to be recognized as a “Best of the Best Firm” by INSIDE Public Accounting. The firm moves its Creve Coeur office to 6 CityPlace.
- 2014: The firm is the only St. Louis-based firm to crack the top 25 in the 2015 Vault Accounting 50, a ranking of the 50 best accounting employers to work for in North America
- 2015: Brown Smith Wallace is named to the INSIDE Public Accounting Top 100 Firms rankings.
- 2016: Anthony Caleca becomes the firm’s third managing partner and the first that is not a founder. The firm merges in the professionals and resources of Bergman Schraier & Co. The firm is named to the Accounting Today Top 100 Firms rankings. Brown Smith Wallace becomes a Limited Liability Partnership.
- 2017: The firm surpasses 300 employees. Brown Smith Wallace launches its strategic plan, Vision 2020.
