St. Louis Startup Community Survey Respondents are Bullish on St. Louis, but Say Challenges Exist

03.22.2016

Report Cover(ST. LOUIS, March 21, 2016) Seventy-two percent of startup survey respondents say that St. Louis is a great place for startups. Eighty percent of the startup support community respondents (e.g., accelerators, incubators, investors, mentors, etc.) concur.

While there’s consensus about the quality of the St. Louis ecosystem, results of the Brown Smith Wallace Startup Community Survey indicate that startups are facing challenges, particularly when it comes to finances. “Survey respondents said that cash flow is the number one challenge they faced in the last year,” says Cathy Goldsticker, tax partner and startup practice leader. “Many of the respondents indicated that they are experiencing challenges in the areas of revenue generation and operational issues—like securing talent and product development.”

Brown Smith Wallace will reveal the results from its inaugural startup community survey Thursday, March 24, at The Venture Café Gathering from 5-6 p.m. Cathy Goldsticker will moderate a panel discussion about the results featuring members of the St. Louis startup community:

  • Mary Jo Gorman, Lead Managing Partner, Prosper Women Entrepreneurs
  • Ginger Imster, CFRE, Executive Director, Arch Grants
  • Rick Ryan, General Partner, Cultivation Capital
  • John Coveyou, Founding Director & Lead Game Designer, Genius Games
  • Clint Matthews, Co-Founder, Start Right Foods

“We are pleased to have leaders from the St. Louis startup community bring their unique insights and perspectives to the survey results,” says Goldsticker.

“The St. Louis startup community is a vital force in growing business in the region,” says Tony Caleca, managing partner of Brown Smith Wallace. “We want to do all we can to facilitate dialog and provide support that helps to cultivate this very important ecosystem.”
