Q&A

Q. What is it about accounting and consulting that first drew your interest?
Originally, I was a chemical engineering major. The technical aspect really interested me, but after a year and a half, I decided I wasn’t going to be a good chemical engineer. When thinking about other career paths, I knew I liked problem solving. I took tax classes and enjoyed having the ability to plan and come up with ways to get benefits for people who might not have known about them.
Q. Without naming names, tell us about your favorite client and why you enjoyed working with them.
I like working with clients whose personalities mesh with mine. This allows us to dig deeper and get creative with solutions.
Q. Please tell us one fun fact about yourself.
I come from a family of barbers. Virtually everyone in my family is or was a barber. My younger brother and I were the first non-barbers of the family. Every male cousin of mine is a barber.
Q. Who is (or was) the most influential person in your life
Probably my mother. She went through a lot of struggles in her life even before I was here, but she never complained about anything. She showed me what is really important in life and taught me not to get hung up on the negative things that have already happened.
Q. If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring accountants or consultants, what would that be?
When you get overwhelmed and think you can’t possibly accomplish the task at hand, take it one step at a time — you’ll get through it.
Q. What do you love most about your work?
The people I work with. It’s amazing how many smart people are in this profession. Being surrounded by such knowledge allows for convenient access to information. It’s empowering being around that many smart people.
