Control Monitoring

Our approach to continuous monitoring is holistic. Our continuous monitoring systems are custom-developed data analysis based on your systems, controls and specific requirements. We examine your challenges strategically, operationally and financially in order to make the correct recommendations in support of your goals.

The cost of a Brown Smith Wallace continuous monitoring engagement is dramatically less than an off-the-shelf system and focuses on your core needs. We provide fully documented monitoring systems and built in ACL that can run on your custom designed schedule.

Tell us your objectives and we'll help you get there. If you haven't identified your specific objectives, the CCM ToolkitTM, our proprietary assessment tool, can help you think through your options. It will help you determine if you want to monitor business areas and KPIs to identify audit targets, or focus on an area of particular risk. It can help you determine the risks your organization needs to approach in order to accomplish your goals and a timeline for implementation. The continuous monitoring professionals at Brown Smith Wallace will customize your control monitoring system to meet your needs.

Some examples of data analysis tests we can perform from a payroll system include:

  • Verification that gross pay is accurate based on hours worked and rate of pay
  • Search for payments made to terminated employees, duplicate payments made to bank routing numbers and payments made without deductions or withheld taxes
  • Identification of overtime paid to employees working less than 40 regular hours or to exempt employees
  • Identification of conflicts between user access and segregation of duties

One of the benefits of working with our control monitoring team is our accessibility.  You can depend on us for on-going support after your system is installed.  If you want to add tests, or have found ways to reduce false positives, we're available to make the changes.  Our staff has the hand-on expertise to help you investigate exceptions and provide process improvement recommendations.  Our extensive knowledge of data analysis tools allows our experienced audit leaders to provide you with a fresh perspective on your risk assessment.
