Ryan is a Principal in Brown Smith Wallace’s Risk Services Department, where he co-leads the Fraud, Forensic and "White Collar Crime" Practice. Ryan also has responsibility for leading engagements that help clients manage business risk, improve processes and internal controls, and comply with the provisions of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act. Ryan joined Brown Smith Wallace after having worked 2+ years for a Nationwide Professional Services firm as a Director in their Risk Services Practice. Prior to that Ryan was an Internal Audit Manager for ShopKo Stores, Inc. where he worked for 4+ years, and before that Ryan worked in the External Audit Groups for Large Regional Professional Services firms such as McGladrey & Pullen, LLP and Eide Bailly, LLP.

Ryan’s background includes:

  • Managing over 100+ internal audit co-sourcing engagements during his career and assisting internal audit departments with the development and execution of entity-wide risk assessments and audit plans for several Fortune 1000 companies.
  • Identifying fraudulent activity for various organizations and subsequently conducting the related detailed fraud investigations.
  • Increased an internal audit department's compliance with the International Standards for the Professional Practice of Internal Auditing by over 50%.
  • Planning and executing financial and operational audits to ensure compliance with the Institute of Internal Auditors Standards and company policy, as well as identifying “best possible practice” opportunities through utilizing the COSO framework.
  • Developing firm wide fraud policy/procedures for a multi-billion dollar organization.

Ryan earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of Wisconsin – Platteville and a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin – Whitewater. Ryan is also a licensed Certified Fraud Examiner.
